So, there have been a lot of silly Internet Memes that have started over the past several years. For example: "Rick Rolling" and "The Internet is for Porn", just to name a few. But in 2010, it seems "Breast Cancer Awareness" memes have really been taking off (you'll see why I put that in quotes in a second). For those who may not remember (or who may be living under a rock), on January 6th of this year the Bra Status Updates Meme hit Facebook and Twitter. Admittedly, this was a clever move by whoever had the original idea. Although no one is really sure who started it (but KYM seems to believe they live in Detroit or Sweden - ha!), it did make a pretty noticeable impact around the Internet. Today, on October 6th, the "I like it on the X" Meme has hit, where females around the interwebs are stating where they like... to keep their purse... supposedly in another effort to raise Breast Cancer Awareness.
Now, I've got to admit that the bra color thing kind of made sense as a Breast Cancer Awareness effort. But how does a cheap sexual innuendo cause people to take breast cancer seriously? Since when do internet memes cause people to take anything seriously? Some of the cynics suggest that the whole meme is really just a situation of the girls "doing it for the lulz" and letting the guys try to figure it out, and I'm inclined to believe they're correct. I don't get how that really helps Breast Cancer Awareness, but that doesn't mean I can't get a kick out of it.
If you haven't been fortunate enough to see any of these in your news feed, here are some of the examples from Know Your Meme:
Well, with any luck I'll get more opportunities to post again soon. This semester has proven to be more rigorous than I originally thought it would be, but I've done a better job than I have in the past of keeping a blog active - so here's to hoping that trend continues. As always, leave me some comment love.
